Like Father Like Son

While Daddy and D'anpa were out turkey hunting in the Hills, Cayel was busy hunting his turkey in the backyard...

His face says it all, "Yeah, I got him Mommy! I shooted him!"

Randomness

In my last randomness post I think I mentioned that the snow was finally gone and that signs of Spring were blooming and blossoming all around us. Um, not so much anymore. For the last 2 weeks the temps have hung right around 40 degrees with even a few 30 degree days and only a splash of 60 degrees on occasion. As I type this, I am looking out the window at white fluffy snowflakes that are indeed, sticking to the ground. Ugh!

Being Spring is now a season of the past, I decided to cut the only tulips that were blooming in our hideous garden in the backyard and bring them in the house to save them from the freeze. They sure look pretty and are a good reminder of what Spring should or better yet, used to look like.

I heard someone say recently that the Black Hills' seasons consist of 7 foot snow drifts from September-June and then road construction, 100 degrees and revving Harley engines from June-August. Even Minnesota mosquitoes are better than snow on May 13th!

Cayel just finished his first year of Awana as a Cubby! He attended once a week at Mt. View Baptist church here in Spearfish from September-April and during those 8 months he memorized 28 Bible verses! We went to his Awards ceremony last Wednesday and it was amazing to see so many kids receive their awards and to hear how many Bible verses they had memorized. Our twin nephews, Jack and Noah also attend Awana in Rapid City and they just finished their 3rd year as Sparks and have memorized an astounding 165 Bible verses in those 3 years! All I can say is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Joshua is still milking turkey season for all it's worth and is a tad bit obsessed. He did manage to successfully shoot his very first turkey with his bow last week. I say successfully because he's tried multiple times in the past but the turkeys always fly away. Hmmm... In addition to shooting the turkey with his bow, he also managed to break/sprain/tear a tendon/severely bruise his thumb in the process. He tried jumping over a creek while carrying his bow in one hand and his turkey in the other. His age gracefully shined through and he didn't quite make it across...he braced his landing with the only free thing he had, his thumb. Ouchy! Honey, you're not 23 anymore.

I too have had my first with turkey hunting this year...I've gone out a handful of times all by myself. That's right...just mywah-me, myself and I! Josh drops me off, he and Cayel go spend quality Daddy/Son time together, Mommy heads into the hills, sets up the decoy, sits against a tree and practices her calling. I'm pretty sure my hen calls sound like a dying or very sick hen but I've managed to successfully call in two different hens and even a doe and buck. The deer probably thought the poor hen was suffering so they came to check it out. Practice. Practice. Practice.

Cayel is getting so excited to start Pre-Kindergarten this fall. Each morning the bus picks up our neighborhood kids and he asks how many more days until he gets to go to school. I'd love to say, "oh honey, don't get so excited, you'll be going for the next 15 years" but Mommy can't burst his excited little bubble. So in the mean time, we play school at home.

We've been busy working on our house the last few months, more accurately since we bought it, but our latest remodel was our upstairs bathroom. We took out everything but the tub and replaced the floor, vanity, mirror and ceiling (unexpected disaster). We finished it off with a fresh coat of paint. I'm in love with it but I must say, I have no idea how people build homes from the bottom up. Not sure building a home will ever be my cup of tea.

After the bathroom remodel, you'd think one would take a break but nope, not me. I was an idiot a motivated person and decided to start painting our bedroom. You see our bedroom has kind of been the dumping zone for the last year and half. You know the room that doesn't have matching furniture, pretty things hanging on the walls or a warm paint color? The room that collects the piles of stuff just because you can shut the door? Well I finally decided to wash the walls and cozy the room up with a splash of color. I even bought window coverings to match our comforter. If only I could motivate myself to finish painting the last wall...any volunteers?

The newest addition to our family is...you ready for this? My new kitchen table! YEAH, I'm so excited I can hardly contain myself! Notice how I say My kitchen table? You see in our house, Josh buys guns and I buy furniture. Guns = Josh's. Furniture = Mine. Don't worry, we share. The story behind this beautiful and much anticipated kitchen table is this...I'm thrifty. But when one of our squeaky chairs finally broke into pieces, we decided it was probably a need and no longer a want. I purchased this squeaky chaired kitchen table from my friend in MN for $35 dollars. I stopped by her house the day before I moved to Spearfish, her husband loaded it into my Dad's truck, it made the 13 hour drive with me during a snow storm that eventually closed I-90 for 3 days and it's been my kitchen table ever since. Squeaky chairs and all, it's done the job. Lots of family meals of been eaten on this table. Lots of prayers have been said at this table. Lots of games played at this table. Lots of laughter had around this table. Although I will miss it, bye-bye Mr. Table

and hello Mrs. Table! Oh wait, I don't have a picture of my new table because my husband says his thumb is broken and he can't put it together. Trust me, it's pretty.

I had a wonderful Mother's Day. God blessed us Mommies in the Black Hills with beautiful weather. What was supposed to be a cold and rainy day, ended up being one of those occasional 60 degree days that I talked about earlier. No wind, no rain, no cold - just sunshine. It was perfect. God also blessed this particular Mommy with the honoring task of raising one of His children, something I will be forever thankful for! Josh was wonderful...he took on the parenting duties Sunday morning and let me sleep in until 9:00! I had forgotten what it was like to sleep until 9:00. I liked it. A lot. We went to church and then they surprised me with a Mother's Day Brunch at the Holiday Inn. The food was spectacular! I got two beautiful cards-one thanking me for being such a great wife and the other was a voice recording of my precious baby saying "I love you Mommy. You're the greatest Mom in the world." Tears. A big puddle of tears. After brunch I surprised my two favorite boys by saying I wanted to go fishing for the afternoon. You should have seen their faces...both of their eyes got as big as saucers and they smiled from ear to ear and responded with, "really?!?!? on Mother's Day you want to go fishing?!?!?" What can I say, the best Mother's Day gift was seeing that joy on the faces of the two people I love most!

And today...well today is my baby sister Chelsea's 21st birthday! That's right, she is 21! I used to play house with her when she was a baby. Take her to Jr High sporting events when she was a toddler. Style her hair when she was in Elementary School. Apply her make-up when she was in High School. And now, she's all "growed up"! Happy Birthday Chelsea Ann! I love you dearly...But does this mean I'm old now?!?!

Have a wonderful weekend! I'm excited for some 60+ degree weather (finally) and a date night with my hubby. I suppose maybe I should tell him that he's taking me on a date? Nahhh.
