summer things
We are only two weeks into the official summer months and already we have been busy with, well, summer things.
Of course, according to Josh and Cayel, the first and most important summer activity has been (and I'm afraid to say, probably will be for months to come) fishing. To say that they are obsessed would be an understatement. But I'll say it anyway, they are OBSESSED and would fish every. single. day. if they could. It's been so fun to see how much of an interest Cayel is taking in this new hobby...He isn't like your typical four year old who loses interest in it quickly, instead, he'll sit on the boat or on shore (or anywhere there's water and fish for that matter) for hours just holding his fishing pole. Granted he gets a thrill out of catching a fish, reeling it in, "petting it," throwing it back in the water, putting new bait on his hook and casting, but he would also be just as content holding his pole in the water catching nothing at all - as long as he was fishing with his daddy. When Cayel was younger, Josh shared that he prayed Cayel would take an interest in hunting and fishing so they would be able to enjoy those things together...well honey, I think your prayers are being answered, maybe quicker than you anticipated. I on the other hand, gulp, fear that I might be losing both of my boys to the depths of Orman Reservoir.
We had our first BBQ a few weeks ago with our small group from church...I am so incredibly excited about leading this small group! I started praying shortly after Josh and I got engaged that the Lord would use us, our story, our marriage, to be a testimony to His love and faithfulness. It has been so beautiful to watch. Although the weather didn't exactly cooperate, the boys had fun huddling around the charcoal grill in our garage, while the women stayed inside visiting. Once the rain passed, we headed out to the backyard and enjoyed a fire and a few yard games. Cayel was in his glory with all the people doting over him.
Memorial weekend was our first camping trip of the year. We went to Keyhole State Park in Wyoming, so beautiful! Aside from the cold, rainy, windy weather...oh, and Josh getting a ticket from the fishing police...we had a lot of fun! Our friends Corey and Sara came with us and the boys managed to get in lots of fishing, the girls managed to get in lots of talking and Cayel fell in love with their dogs. He now thinks he needs a dog. But not a little dog, a hunting dog. "Too bad you don't hunt yet honey. We'll talk about it again in five years. Maybe ten."
And to top off our busy streak of summer activities, we recently drove back to Minnesota to attend my cousin Brooke's wedding. Although the trip was quick, we jam packed in as much family fun as we could. I got to spend Saturday morning at my dear friend Summer's new salon getting pampered. A handful of my closest friends stopped by to say "hello" and I even got to meet my friend Andrea's precious new baby girl, Emmy. Oh she is an angel! To top my morning off, I got to do all of this with no little voice saying, "Mommy!!" Cayel spent the morning with daddy, papa and nana, his aunts and two cousins. They were busy riding circles in the driveway...bumps, bruises and scuffed knees.
Saturday afternoon and evening was my cousin's wedding/reception and oh my was it beautiful...everything from the bride and groom, to the decorations, to my stunning aunt who was Mother of the Bride. Just simply, beautiful!
All four of my grandparent's children were there, all seven of their granddaughters were there and all seven great grandchildren were there, not to mention all of the spouses/significant others. It was so fun to be able to take the time to visit with everyone, amazing all of the time you get to visit when it isn't your own wedding :). And I just absolutely loved having my husband by my side...I got to show him off to some of my family members who had yet to meet him, got to introduce him to family friends and even got to dance with him a couple of times - I fell in love with him all over again that night. Cayel had a blast with all of his cousins and 2nd cousins dancing the night away! He made it until 9:30 before he started crying that his feet "hurted" and that he wanted to go to papa and nana's house to "sweep." Wish granted after a wonderful night!
Sunday we spent the day with my mom's side of the family at a lake near the town I grew up in. We had a BBQ with lots of yummy and unhealthy food, spent the afternoon on the pontoon (thanks Grant and Ali), watched the kids fish and even let them swim in their undies because we forgot swimming suits. I promised myself I would never be one of those mom's that let their kid run around in their underwear, but here's a picture of my kid, that's right my kid, running around in his batman undies. Graduation picture.
After our day at the lake we ended our last night in my parents backyard enjoying a bonfire, roasting hot dogs and baseball sized marshmallows. Did you know they make baseball sized marshmallows?!?! Yea, me neither. I ate four of them. Paid for it at exercise class Wednesday too.
And that's been the extent of our summer activities so far...tomorrow Cayel gets a surprise afternoon at the new outdoor water park here in Spearfish, Thursday we'll help daddy celebrate his birthday and Friday we'll spend the evening on the lake fishing. I love summer!
