Here's to Great Grandpa Jim!

I had to post this picture . . . For those of you that know my Grandpa Jim (Hoeft), you also know that anytime he is doing something that takes concentration, he has his tongue out of his mouth and, if he is really concentrating, he makes this little motor noise with it. Well, if you look closely, you will see that Cayel is in deep concentration . . . and just like Great Grandpa Jim, with his tongue hanging out.

Cayel's First Teeth Polishing

Well, today Cayel got to expereince his first teeth cleaning at the Dentist. He was such a BIG boy and did a great job! He sat in the chair (all by himself), opened his mouth wide (saying AHHHHH as loud as he could) and even let the Hygenist polish his teeth up before painting them with flouride. Cayel was so cute, when the Hygenist explained that she was going to paint his teeth, he said, "you don't paint teeth, only walls." The Dentist was impressed, said that he had wonderful teeth and complimented that mom must be doing a great job at brushing :)! Here are some pictures of his newly polished teeth . . .

Two Sick Men and a Healthy Little Lady

Whew, what a day!

It all started yesterday when Cayel woke up from his nap with rosy cheeks. All I had to do was take one look at him to know he was running a temp . . . sure enough, 102 degrees. I thought for sure he would be down for the count the rest of the night but instead, he ran around the house playing and giggling, he ate a huge supper, drank lots of fluid and went to bed without complaining of any aches and pains (even though the fever was still lingering). Hopeful that it was a "fluke," I went to bed, only to be woken up by the sound of Josh profusely vomiting. This continued every 15 minutes from midnight on . . .

So this morning Doctor Mom kicked in! I bleached both bathrooms and every door handle and light switch in the house. I washed bedding, sprayed OUST, changed garbage bags and emptied vomit filled buckets. I took temperatures (Cayel continued to run a 101 degree temp through the night and throughout the day), gave medication, pushed fluids and made phone calls to physicians. All I can say is thank goodness it was 50 degrees here today so I could have the windows and doors open.

All morning I listened to Cayel run around the house playing and giggling wondering why in the heck he had a fever - no vomiting, no diarrhea, no coughing, no runny nose, sleeping fine, eating fine, drinking fine. If he was a baby, I would blame it on teeth but he got his 2-year molars a year ago so no more teeth due to come in for a few more years. Hmmmmm . . . he had me stumped. While I pondered Cayel's "illness" I heard Josh grunting and moaning in between trips to the bathroom.

By noon I had Cayel fed and down for a nap, Grandma Linda at the house babysitting and Josh in the car driving him to the Emergency Room. The poor thing held a bucket in his lap and moaned the entire car ride - he looked like death. After 3 hours in the Emergency Room, an IV with 2 bags of fluids, an X-Ray, blood work and a urine sample - it was determined that he had a bad case of the flu. Thankfully it was nothing severe and they sent us home.

As I write this, the house is quiet . . . Cayel is bathed and sound asleep (I'm still so boggled by his temp that I didn't even bother checking it tonight), the house smells like a combination of bleach, pine sol and OUST (not so pleasant, but clean) and I was finally able to get Josh off the couch to take a shower, brush his teeth and eat some chicken noodle soup.

My day as Doctor Mom is officially over - bed, here I come (let's just pray I don't get the flu) . . .

What Happens at Uncle Josh's and Aunt Marcy's, Stays at Uncle Josh's and Aunt Marcy's

Friday night we had the pleasure of having our nephews Jack and Noah (aka "Nonah") stay overnight. And boy was it a riot!

We started the night with a game of bowling at LUCKY STRIKES Bowling Alley. Noah gracefully ended the game with the most STRIKES (of course I came in second), Cayel won the award for slowest ball rolling down the lane :), Jack managed to get the most SPLITS and Josh squeaked by with the winning score.

Cayel talking off "Nonah's" ear

After bowling we let the boys decide where they wanted to have supper and unanimously the vote was the Pizza Ranch (go figure if they have some of Josh's blood in them). Forgetting that all rules go out the window when mom and dad aren't around, we let the boys get their own pop while we got their plates of food ready. When they got back to the table Jack had a very serious and concerned look on his face, he continued with, "my mom doesn't let Noah drink Diet Coke." So, of course I played the parent and asked Noah what kind of pop he was drinking (full well knowing it was Diet Coke). As innocent as ever, he replied with, "what did you say?" I laughed as he took a huge gulp of his Diet Coke (that was filled to the brim of the glass). "What happens at uncle Josh's and aunt Marcy's, stays at uncle Josh's and aunt Marcy's."

Once Cayel was put to bed, the boys decided it was time for a die hard game of Monopoly (once again, must have some of uncle Josh's blood in them). Before we even began the game, I suggested that we play the shortened version (being it was already 8:00) - all 3 boys responded with, "NO WAY!!" Boy was I impressed with how well they know how to play Monopoly . . . I don't know how many times Noah shot Josh down on one of his "proposals" for property - it was hilarious :)! Of course the game got heated just as it was bedtime for the boys - as I gave the count down for bed (10 minutes . . . 5 minutes), all 3 boys argued with me and said (at the same time) "what happens at uncle Josh's and aunt Marcy's stays at uncle Josh's and aunt Marcy's." From that point on, "bedtime" was null and void. Thankfully the game ended (with me winning :) around 10:00 - so, they were only a half an hour over their bedtime (whew).

What fun would it be to have a sleepover at an awesome aunt and uncles :) if it didn't consist of junk food, sugar, pop, games and no bedtimes?!?!?! Mission accomplished!

Learning how to ice skate . . .

Josh had a leadership class all day Saturday so I decided it would be a perfect day for some mommy and Cayel time. My co-worker had given us a pair of his son's old ice skates that he grew out of and they had been sitting in my car for the past couple of weeks waiting for a decent day (lately, it has either been 45 degrees and sloppy wet or -10 degrees and frostbite wouldn't be far fetched). Saturday was a perfect day so I decided to attempt to teach him how to ice skate (yes, the thought of making him wear his bicycle helmet crossed my mind, Josh even suggested that he wear it :).

We started out with the ice skates but Cayel was a little hesitant and afraid so I put on his tennis shoes and let him skate around that way. Once he got comfortable, he asked to have his ice skates back on - he had fun falling down, trying to stand up, falling down, trying to stand up and falling down again (over and over) . . .
Down . . .

Trying to get up . . .

Almost . . .

I have to think it was a lot of work for him because boy was I tired from trying to hold him up!

After about 30 minutes of this, he decided not to try and get up anymore and just laid down on the ice. He had so much fun and I'm thinking that if I keep taking him out to practice, that maybe someday he'll play for the Minnesota WILD :)!

After our ice skating expedition, we warmed up with some hot chocolate at Starbucks!

Kids say the darndest things!

Here is a glimpse of the conversation that was had a few nights ago at the dinner table . . .

Part I:
Cayel: "Daddy, you have a baby in your tummy?"

Josh: (Looking at me like I forgot to fill him in on something). "No, boys don't have babies in their tummies."

Cayel: (Lifting up his shirt to look at his belly). "Me don't have a baby in my tummy."

Cayel: "Mommy, you have a baby in your tummy?"

Marcy: "No honey, mommy doesn't have a baby in her tummy either."

Cayel: "Me want a baby. Me want a sista."

Marcy (thinking): "Ummmm . . . "

Josh: "Eat a bite of your chicken Cayel."

Marcy (thinking): "Good answer."

Part II (a few nights later):
Cayel: (Lifting his shirt to point to his belly). "Me's tummy hurts."

Marcy: (Feeling his forehead hoping that it isn't the flu). "Do you have to throw up?"

Cayel: "No. Me have a baby in there."

Marcy: (Trying not to laugh). "Really? How did you get a baby in your tummy?"

Cayel: "At the grocery store."

Marcy: LAUGHING HYSTERICALLY - Oh yea, DAHHH!

Oh the innocence and sweetness of children. If only we could live life through their eyes for a day :)!

** Now, for those of you secretly wondering where all this "baby in my tummy" talk is coming from, there are two moms at Cayel's daycare that are pregnant and have "babies (or a baby) in their tummies. **

He is fasinated and it's his newest phase. Let's just hope he doesn't start asking where they come from at the age of 3 . . .

Newest Addition to the Horak Family . . .

Ha, Ha! Bet you thought I was going to say we were having a baby uh?!?!?! Nope! The newest addition to the Horak family is an adorable, sweet, cuddly, lovable 10 week old golden retriever puppy named Molly.

Molly is Dick's birthday (January 15th)/retirement (January 16th) gift from his children, children in-laws (I don't think that is really a word???) and 5 grandsons. He had been talking about getting a puppy for months and with retirement (and lots of FREE time on his hands) just around the corner, the family (with Linda's blessing of course :) decided to make the decision for him and surprise him! And what a surprise it was . . . check out the smile on his face when little Molly (with a beautiful red bow) is put into his lap!

Below are a few pictures of Cayel "puppy sitting" Molly (Dick and Linda brought her over to play while they ran to Walmart for puppy supplies one night). At first he wanted her to play in his room with him but once she started chewing on his toys, he decided that they should watch a movie instead. Thankfully she likes the Jungle Book as much as he does :).

Happy Birthday and Happy Retirement Dick! And welcome to the family little miss Molly (the very first granddaughter :)!

Our First Christmas

I was reminded of how extra special this Christmas was when Josh hugged me on Christmas Eve and whispered in my ear, "it's our first Christmas together as husband and wife, I've waited my whole life for this." So have I . . . So have I . . . Thank you Lord for the blessing of my husband and my beautiful complete family!

Another blessing that we thanked God for this Christmas was the opportunity to be surrounded by our families and to be able to share in the joy of Christmas with those we love the most. It all started the weekend before Christmas . . .

The HOEFT Christmas
This year we started a new tradition (that I hope we do every year) . . . Instead of exchanging Christmas gifts, my entire family went to the Twin Cities and spent a weekend at The Water Park of America.

This place is AWESOME!! It is an ENORMOUS indoor water park that has a huge kids wading pool with slides and a jungle gym, a lazy river, a wave pool, a surfing pool, 2 hot tubs and somewhere around 10+ slides. Just to give you an idea of how enormous this place is, there are a 136 stairs to the top of the highest slide and it takes 300,000 gallons of water to fill the water park (got my info from the "fun facts" on their website :). Did you hear that?!?!?! 136 stairs! That's right, it was a WORKOUT! And of course, the funnest slide was at the very top - I can't even count how many times we made the trek up . . . My dad was such a trooper, broken shoulder and all, he put on his swim trunks and climbed the set of 136 stairs to go down the family slide - better yet, he did it twice! I'm not quite sure who enjoyed it more, the kids or the adults :)? After our hours of swimming, we retreated to our rooms and played game after game of Monopoly (the war continued from Thanksgiving). My husband is simply addicted to this game! The first night my sister had to kick us out of their room so they could go to sleep because it was 3:30 in the morning and Josh wanted to start another game :)!

It was truly a wonderful weekend filled with fun, laughter, bonding and most importantly family time!

The HORAK Christmas
We got the pleasure of spending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with Josh's family. I love their traditions . . . and most of all, I love being a part of their family! Christmas Eve Josh and I attended the early church service at our church. We have been going to Countryside Church since we met, it is where we got married and we were excited to experience our first Christmas Eve church service there. But, we couldn't bare the thought of not going to Josh's parents church with his family for the candlight service. So, what did we do? Went to both! Our service started at 3:30 and Josh's parent's started at 4:30 (cutting it close I would say) so, we went to ours (ducked out a few minutes early of course) and made it to Josh's parent's church with 5 minutes to spare (we even beat his mom and sister :). Needless to say, both services were beautiful and we left overwhelmingly filled with God's love. After church we went to Josh's parents where we had an amazing dinner and finished the night with games. Christmas morning we went back to Josh's parents to spend the majority of the day opening gifts, eating, opening more gifts (we got very spoiled), eating more and eating more and more and more (we got very fat)! We ended Christmas Night playing the game "Partini" (we had given it to Dick and Linda for Christmas). . . It is SO much fun!! Josh was excited to be able to play guys against gals (he said it was the first Christmas he had a "gal" and wasn't the 5th wheel - I felt honored :).

This too, was a truly wonderful couple of days together as a family. Josh's sister, brother-in-law and two nephews were in town visiting from Cedar Rapids, IA and his sister, brother-in-law and two nephews that live in Rapid City spent a few days at his parent's house also - we got lots of family time and lots of time to love up the nephews.

The JOSH, MARCY & CAYEL Christmas
This was my first Christmas without my baby (he celebrated it with Brian this year) and my was it hard . . . Thankfully he was only gone a couple of days and we were able to have our own little family Christmas that Sunday evening. It was perfect!

Cayel is finally at a fun age where he understands a little more the meaning of Christmas and can anticipate the fun and excitement of gifts. Because he associates presents with his "birfday," he had a hard time understanding that it wasn't his birthday, but Christmas. After we explained that it was Jesus' birthday - he walked around saying "it's Jesus' birfday but I get His presents" . . . hmmmm, okay, that works too :). He was beyond spoiled (as I think most kids are) and received so many wonderful gifts.

Mom was most excited about his 3 foot tall stuffed black grizzly bear (that beautifully matches his "outdoor themed" bedroom) but Cayel wasn't too sure about it. He latched onto daddy as he starred at it - I even had to bribe him with another present to get him to put his arm around it and take a picture. Oh well, I like it (that's what matters, right?!?!:)

The winner this year is the electronic GeoTrax Train set he got from mommy and daddy. This thing is SO much fun and the possibilities are endless (if you go to the GeoTrax website, you can see all the parts and pieces that are available to add, quite literally you could build a town!) . . . Everyone else in the family went along with the GeoTrax theme and bought pieces that could be added (he even got a second train) - he LOVES it!!

It was a wonderful Christmas!

Once again, I am in awe of the great blessings that God has abundantly blessed me with . . . The opportunity to be a mother to an adorable and sweet little boy, Cayel's health and his will as a 2 year old to overcome a traumatic brain injury, hospitalization and rehabilitation, my wonderful...loving...unselfish...Godly husband, my parents and sisters, my in-laws, my job during this uneasy and volitile time, my adorable and cozy house that is HOME to my family, Cayel's daycare family that loves him as much as we do, our church that fills us with His hope and love each and every Sunday, my Bible Study friends (lots of "moms" and "grandmas" to love me up), the beautiful and safe community that we live in, my health, my past experiences, and . . . each of you!
